I was just thinking.. It seems the amount of spam posts/threads is doubling every day. Emily, can you set it so all new members have to be approved by one of the mods before they're allowed to post? That would certainly cut back on the spam. I don't think it would be too big of an inconvenience to new members, since there are a few of us mods here now?

I have to agree, can this be done?

I am pretty sure something like that can be done, I just have to look how? I can also try setting up the way registration is to see if there is some anti spam bot precaution I can take that already has not been implemented.
Emily, as an admin from another board there are severals ways in the admin cp that you can combat this. You can have the verification letters that have to be typed in, you can make a new user group for new members from areas of the world that have the most spammers, we found that most of them are in canada and china. If you have any question feel free to ask me. I would be more than happy to help. Also I don't think you have the email going out that you have to open and click the link of to move from a member waiting on email activation to a registered user. Hope this helps some. That way they don't have to wait on someone to get online and approve them. Because the only people that can get into do that are the admins.

OK I set it so that it has an image verification and other verification for when you register.. if that doesn't help we'll have to step it up a bit.
you may want to do a test acct and see if it works. we had it happen that with 2 turned on neither of them worked.

I have to agree. But a lot of them are bots too. That's why the verification letters work a good bit.

Weird I don't know what is going on. We were having an issue with newbies not being able to register but my techie fixed that and now the spammers are here again.. I'll put more security measures in place, thanks for doing a good job cleaning up for me guys.

I've noticed that everyone of the spammers have an ICQ # I sure hope they don't bring a virus into the group whenever they join. :weirdface

Sherry, as long as you don't click on any of the links that are posted in the profiles or the spam posts they put up, you don't need to worry about viruses. But the links may very well be linked to a viral site.

There are a lot of new "members" with really weird names that seem to have joined the forum on October 27.
None of them have posted.
Are these spammers?

We've cleaned them up, they are spammers. I put in some new security measures that should help, I don't know why the sudden influx of spam. Its really annoying.

We had a crazy amount of spammers sign up and reinforced new security measures. New users, your first 2 posts most be approved before going live as a precautionary measure against spam. We want to keep this site family friendly and most of the spam, to say the least, was not. Hope this doesn't inconvenience or drive away any new timer's, we'll approve your post ASAP. In the meantime feel free to jump on in and get in the thick of things!
