I needed to file down the surface of Cai's beak, he had pealing and I didn't want any food particles to get under the edge and cause problems. After smoothing and oiling his beak, he looks so handsome, he got mifted and flew around the light on the table to his cage and gave me a dirty look! :lol
I smoothed and oiled Caia's beak too, she's beautiful, then held her for awhile to let her know I still love her. :hug

holly,

how to you do that? bailey's beak seems to be very rough on the edges..almost as if it cracked and broke? maybe it's just peeling..i never knew that food could somehow get caught in there. i will be taking him for his first year vet visit next month so i'll see what the vet says as i'd be afraid to try any filing myself???

I file Kiwi's beak all the time as he doesn't chew enough to wear it down..I just use a fine emery board, and he tolerates it alright..

Susan,
I wrapped Cai in a towel with only his beak showing and smoothed the surface and shortened the tip just a little to blunt it, I did the same with Caia. When filing the tip of the beak you have to be careful you don't get too close to the vein in it. With a WBC you can hold it up to the light and see how far down it goes. With a black beak (Conures) I'm just very cautious.

If I'd have tried that with Cori, I would have been shredded.

I file down Maia's also. I use an emery board. I hold her on her back and put my hand over her eyes and file it. She yells a little but she is fine. I just take the tip off when it gets super sharp.
