Hi All....I have been on and off of this site for years. It has been a while since I have been on. Hope all is well and Happy New Year. I am Mom to Bella, an almost 4 year old WBC, who has been an only birdy in my household since I got her at 9 months old. I am single and live by myself. In 5 weeks, a sweet Maltipoo pup, 3 months old, named Oliver, will be joining our family. This is the first time I have owned a dog and I am very excited for this sweetie. For those of you that have dogs and Caiques, do you have any special tips or suggestions for me, so that this addition to our household will go well for Bella, Oliver and me? I want Bella not to be stressed out by this pup, and want her to see that I have enough love in me for her and for Oliver. I would appreciate any helpful hints/tips. Thanks so much!! Beth

What an adorable little dog. So cute. All I can say is BE CAREFUL. A dog/puppy can kill a bird so fast. In the blink of an eye. The puppy would want to play with Bella and could easily kill her just by playing. I don't mean to sound harsh here but I have friends who have lost their birds to dogs they trusted. I think people get so comfortable with their dogs and birds being around each other that they forget the dangers. I wish you nothing but the best and please just always pay attention whenever they are around each other. I have two lab mix dogs and although one likes the birds, I still never take my eye off of them. It just isn't worth the risk. Good luck with adding to your family, you can make it work......connie

I agree with Connie. I lost a BH caique due to a petsitter/dog/bird tragedy...I won't go into the details here again ( they are elsewhere on this forum---there is a thread about birds and dogs together), but my advice would be to make sure the dog and the bird are not out and about together. Even dogs who are friendly to birds can make one mistake: remember that dogs are, by nature, predators.Even the really cute ones.

Your puppy is adorable and I am sure you will love him to pieces!

Yeah they are right about dogs and birds, but we have 2 pomeranians who are terrified of my bhc, and he wants to play with them so badly it's sad!! He will flap down to the floor everytime he sees them and chase them, and man do they run away!! I never let my dogs be around the birds unless we are there even though they are huge chickens. As long as you supervise, all should be well. That is an adorable puppy!!

well..your new pup is adorable. i have a maltese/terrrier/poodle mix (chuckie). i had him first and he was 10 years old when i brought bailey (wbc) into our home. at first my dog would whine alot when bailey was around, but now after a year he is pretty much used to him. however, when i'm playing with bailey, chuckie notices and will start trying to get my attention. as the others have stated, i just wouldn't let them get close to each other. it amazes me that altho some "think" their bird/dog/cats "get along" there is always that chance that one may lash out at the other. it's in their nature. and even if it isn't a conflict, an injury or death can happen in play.
